Carbon & Forests
Trees absorb atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis, using water and sunlight to turn it into wood. Young trees are three times more efficient at carbon capture than older trees. When trees die, they release that carbon back into the atmosphere through fire or decay. MFI members instead turn the wood into products we use every day, thus locking up the carbon for long periods of time. And using wood instead of fossil-fuel intensive products like plastic favors a renewable and sustainable future. Minnesota’s forests absorb 14% of the carbon released from all other sources, and we are the only carbon-negative sector of the economy!
